Texas - I used to have a 9 to 5 job, actuarial work. In 1972 I answered an ad. My wife & I went to a 3-hour opportunity meeting. It was awful. 150 crazy people jumping around onstage, talking about weird things falling out of their colon.

After the meeting, my wife & I snuck out the back and left. We couldn't do it earlier because of the standard MLM armed guards at the door.

On the way out, this guy stopped us and asked, "Are you the people that answered the ad?" I said, "Yeah."

I wondered how he knew. Later I figured we were the only guests out of 150 people. Anyway, he gave me a 30-second word picture.

At the end of that word-picture, I said, "So, how do I join?"

His 30 seconds was more powerful than that entire 3-hour meeting. What he said to me was:

"Big Al, when you join our business, here's what happens. Six months from now you walk into your boss' office, lean back in the chair, put your feet up on his desk, dig in some little scuff marks with your heels, and calmly tell the boss you can't fit him in your schedule any longer, and you're resigning, effective today.

"If they need any help after you leave, they can call you any Tuesday at your normal consulting rate. Then you leave his office, go out to your desk, pick up your personal belongings, wave good-bye to all your fellow employees who said it couldn't be done, then hop into your brand-new bonus car, drive down to the bank, pull up to the drive-in teller and say, 'Deposit this commission check. I don't know. Put it in savings or checking. I don't know. I get these things all the time.' Then drive home and have a nice glass of your favorite beverage."

And I asked, "How do I join?" That's how I got started.

Your Other Options

I don't know. You can probably take out a 2nd mortgage on your home and open a store in the mall, buy yourself a job. You can make sandwiches for a franchise. Let's see … you can go on the web. Everybody makes money on the web, right?

You can mow lawns.

Here's what I tell people is the key.

You ALREADY recommend and promote every day. Everybody does. And that's all network marketing is. You may as well collect on it. You're doing it for free. If you've been doing it for free all your life, and you start getting that extra income, put it in the bank, all of a sudden you got a pile of cash. That's why I recommend it.

You can do it for free or collect the check, your personal choice. I'm not here to run your life. You're in charge of your own decisions. I'm not responsible for the wife you chose or the husband you chose or where you chose to live. And I'm certainly not responsible for whether you want to pick up a check or not.

But it's there. You earned it. Your decision.

o I leave it like that. And most people kind of figure it out.

Why People Fail In MLM

They ALL have the motivation, because they joined. They're positive, because they said, "Hey, I think I can do it," and they gave people money. They all have set goals. They have all these things.

But they don't have the skills. They don't know what to do. I talk about icebreakers in our workshop. People get involved in network marketing and get excited about it. They memorize the marketing plan. They memorize the products.

And then when they come up to somebody they think, "Now I don't want to sound like a salesman. I don't want to embarrass myself. I don't want to get rejected. I want to keep my dignity. So what do I say to get the conversation started?"

And they can't think of anything, which really hurts their business.

So the reason most people fail is, they don't have the skills. They don't know what to say or what to do. So I give them a few ideas of what to say and what to do so they can effectively go out and do the business. Whenever I'm in a city doing a seminar, we invite all our newsletter subscribers to a skills workshop for 10 bucks. People need that training.
